Pros & Cons

  • The graduate program is the best part of the company. It gave us good guidance through the first two years of working. It allowed us to develop our hard and soft skills as early professionals. The program was well structured and well delivered. The graduate program had great social aspects to it as well. We get together as a New Zealand cohort and get to network with the other graduates. This is beneficial as we now feel connected with the wider NZ team as opposed to just having connections in our own office.
  • The best thing is the diversity of people and the opportunity for growth within my career

  • The types of work and projects I have worked on are awesome. They are challenging, complex but at the end of the day you can see how much of a positive impact is possible through the work we do.
  • I really love that there are many Graduates in different areas of expertise and we have the opportunity to network quite often. My communications and engagement team are the most supportive and uplifting people. I'm so grateful to work with experts in my field who push me out of my comfort zone and continuously support me. The work life - home life balance is really great as well.
  • Some of the work processes that make things harder than they might be at smaller companies.
  • Dealing with timesheets and time spent, repetitive work
  • Terrible commute in CBD, upwards of 2 hours can be lost in transit. However, I work mostly in EBA site office.
  • Nothing comes to mind
  • Some days are quiet in terms of workload and other days are very full on, can get draining at times

Corporate Social Responsibility
We have several policies in place for our CSR, one in particular is all employees are given a day of leave to volunteer. In our office this is mostly used for managing a reserve that our office has sponsored. This involves wedding, planting and managing pests at the site.

Culture

Culture
AECOM's work culture is great. If anything is keeping me here it is the cool jobs and the work culture. We embrace diversity in the workplace and celebrate many cultures. We have a supportive team, from people managers all the way up to the regional manager. We socialize both in the office with work events and after work as well (social sports, BBQs, tea get togethers).

My role in the company and the projects I am involved in goes over and beyond what I would have expected coming into this job. The work is awesome and really allows me to grow in the technical space. There is plenty of opportunity for learning new software.

Recruitment
Very straightforward process and assessment, along with standard interview questions that I experienced. My manager wanted to get to know me as a person and how I work which was great! He asked me things about myself and also how I would work in group scenarios. Read some company culture and business line. what interest you to work with the company if you get the job. This would assist you to get the idea for interview. And be yourselves.

Good pay for graduates starting out, not much in terms of bonuses. We have discounts for travel, mostly rental cars and hotels, where we can use the corporate rates for personal use. We have health insurance with Southern Cross, as well as will, pay insurance etc. We have really good parental leave policies, ability to purchase additional leave, and employer matched KiwiSaver. We have some health benefits including a rebate for gym membership and tax free ebike or bike purchase.

Training

Training
We have an early professional program that takes 2 years to complete. Most are online training sessions which are easy enough. Most skills in the first few years are on the job developed, I have had deep dives into excel, QGIS and ArcGIS. I have also had some opportunities to gain skills in safety Audits, with an allowance for formal training to occur next year. I have developed skills with clients, land use planning, safety, transport planning as well as more soft skills.

Work Hours
Very flexible. Their saying is "if it works for you and it works for the client then it works for AECOM'. There is obviously still the expectation that you meet your required work hours but the flexibility is great. However, as a young professional it is encouraged that you have standard work hours and come into the office in order to get the best learning. But if you need to move your day around there is great flexibility.

Sustainability
Sustainability is one of my passions and AECOM's efforts in the area were a significant reason for choosing it as my grad role. All my projects have had a ESG aspect as it is no longer an option to add onto a project. It is essential now and an integral part of most businesses' strategies.
