Your role

Job Description:

  • This entry-level/early career professional, product-focused position applies knowledge of engineering principles and design practices to create optimized design concepts and mechanical design specifications that consider application, cost, weight, performance, reliability, durability, manufacturing, assembly, and serviceability factors.
  • The position requires the ability to effectively communicate design concepts to meet cross-functional requirements (including evaluation of alternative and competitive design concepts) and to work effectively across functions (including those that must solve product problems) to develop business and customer requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Under the guidance of more experienced team members, investigate Value Package Introduction (VPI) project team or field issues, understand cause and effect mechanisms, propose appropriate actions, develop problem solutions from a design perspective, and document results.
  • Apply and support the execution of processes (e.g., critical design decisions, system design, verification consideration checklists, design reviews) and tools (e.g., iDFMEA, DVA, GD&T, CREO, ANSYS Workbench) required to achieve quality components and subsystem level design decisions and design improvements.
  • Solicit input and consult with cross-functional and cross-disciplinary technical experts and senior designers to communicate component and subsystem design intent through comprehensive design review packages to Lead Product Technology (PPT), Value Package Introduction (VPI), or Value Package Change Request (VPCR) teams that require such holistic evaluation of various design concepts.
  • Supports design decisions in concept selection, concept optimization, and design specifications that impact customers who will be targeted for service through specific Leading Product Technology (PPT), Value Package Introduction (VPI), or Value Package Change Request (VPCR) initiatives.
  • Develops problem solutions for moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems, or services of increasing technical complexity and ambiguity as experience is gained in this position.
  • Independently executes established work processes and systems while developing technical or product knowledge; participates in system and process improvements.
  • Participates in basic direct personnel management, but may be involved in coordinating and directing efforts among technical staff and/or temporary student workers.
  • Effectively contributes to team goals, influences within the work group, and continually improves abilities critical to success in the position.

About you

To apply for this role, you must have the following eligibilities:

Skills:

  • Cross-Functional Design Integration - The ability to translate value package requirements that incorporate input from many stakeholders into a virtual design and communicate the design through approved cross-functional design reviews.
  • Mechanical Design Modeling and Analysis - Create computer-aided design models to Cummins standards to represent structural or product-level system design concepts and be able to complete various system-level computer analyses such as dimensional deviation analysis and finite element analysis.
  • Mechanical Design of Mechanical Systems - Gain and apply a deep understanding of mechanical systems through working knowledge that guides designers to form innovative and sound design concepts to meet Cummins and customer expectations; Provide sound systems by considering customer requirements in different operating environments and designing to requirements in all life cycle phases.
  • Mechanical Design Specifications - Create complete specifications in the form of solid models, configured engineering bills of materials, and detailed drawings to communicate to different functional departments the information needed to manufacture and inspect the product as per the design intent; define part specifications accurately and precisely considering national, international, industry and Cummins standards.
  • Product Functional Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis - Influence product design decisions by using and/or interpreting computational tools and methods to predict product functional capabilities relative to system, subsystem, and/or part-level requirements.
  • Product Platform Planning and Construction - Create and develop overall product platforms, including key architectural features and functional variants required to align with market-level product plans for future target markets; generate alternative architectures traceable to requirements and collaborate with lifecycle stakeholders on trade-off analyses to ensure a balanced and optimal platform is provided; communicate and maintain traceable information and plans executed by product development teams.
  • Product Problem Solving - Resolves product issues using processes that protect customers; identifies non-random causes; implements comprehensive, data-based solutions; and identifies systematic root causes and recommended actions to prevent recurrence.
  • System Requirements Engineering - Translate stakeholder requirements into verifiable requirements for development and design using appropriate methods and tools; determine acceptance criteria for systems involved through analysis, assignment, and negotiation; track the status of requirements throughout the system lifecycle; evaluate the impact of changes to system requirements on project scope, schedule, and resources; create and maintain information linking related artifacts.
  • Collaboration - Build partnerships and work with others to achieve common goals.
  • Communicate effectively - Develop and implement multimodal communications with a clear understanding of the specific needs of different audiences.
  • Decision Quality - Make timely, high-quality decisions that drive organizational growth.
  • Drive for Results - Consistently achieve results, even in difficult situations.
  • Self-development - Actively seek new ways to develop and improve yourself, using both formal and informal development channels.
  • Value Differences - Recognize the value that different perspectives and cultures bring to the organization.
  • Avoid Product Failure Modes - Effectively improve the reliability of Cummins products by identifying interfaces, functions, functional requirements, interactions, control factors, and noise factors and prioritizing potential failure modes and potential causes of failure involving systems, thereby reducing potential product failure modes.
  • Product Configuration and Change Management - Determine the baseline of identified product artifacts based on configuration management; frequently issue, track, control, and communicate changes from concept to retirement through work requests; establish and maintain the integrity of the product artifact baseline.
  • Systems Thinking - Helps plan problem statements, scope, and deliverables by defining the system involved by mapping its boundaries, identifying its context, interfaces, and lifecycle; Analyzes the connections and interactions between the elements that make up the system involved by using appropriate methods, models, and integration of results to understand the system, predict its behavior, and recommend improvements to produce desired effects.
  • Technical Documentation - Providing documented information based on knowledge gained as part of the technical function activities; communicating with stakeholders to improve technical productivity and effectively transfer knowledge to those who do not have first-hand experience.
  • Product Development Execution, Monitoring, and Control - Plans, schedules, coordinates, and executes activities involved in developing products to meet the requirements hierarchy and technology profile accordingly; monitors and communicates across functional boundaries to meet project resource and quality expectations; ensures product capabilities meet or exceed expectations and takes mitigating actions when project risks are higher than expected; understands the complete product life cycle process and stakeholders.

Education, Qualifications, Certifications:

  • An associate's, bachelor's, or equivalent degree in engineering or a corresponding STEM field is required.
  • Certain positions may require a graduate (Master's) degree related to the area of expertise.
